Environment and Sustainability

Orrcon Steel and its parent company BlueScope recognises its social responsibility to reduce its environmental impact and improve sustainability.  As part of a bigger business, we’re focusing our actions on creating sustainable results.

Sustainability goes beyond protecting the environment and includes promoting safe, healthy, inclusive workplaces, using transparent supply chains and responsible products, and supporting our communities now and for the future.

A few examples of our sustainable practices include:

• Working closely with parent company BlueScope Steel to develop and implement a robust HSE Management system (aligned to AS4801 & ISO14001) to manage the operating risks within the business. The HSE Management system provides the tools for Site Management Teams to identify, assess and develop sufficient controls for the operating risks and to train our workforce in implementing those controls.
• BlueScope holding a WorldSteel Climate Action Program certificate in recognition of its ongoing participation in the WorldSteel CO₂ Data Collection Program.
• Holding independent third-party accreditation to ISO14001 Environmental Management System certificate, ensuring a commitment to continuously improve environmental performance.
• Goals for net zero by 2050 and a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (compared to 2018 levels) by 2030.
• A fully integrated steelmaking method that enables a high overall recycling rate. This enables continual recycling with no degradation in performance. Up to 25% of BlueScope’s steel is manufactured from recovered steel content, which includes 8.5% post-consumer recycled and 6.5% pre-consumer recycled.
